Lúc Verling was born in the Connemara Gaeltacht and raised in Limerick City, where he attended St Clement’s College. Encouraged in his writing by his English and Irish teachers, he was chosen by Val Mulkearns to participate in a short story master-class while in secondary school.
Fascinated by marine biology, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from University College, Galway, before turning his attention to writing and documentary-making. He started as a reviewer for The Limerick Leader and Circa Art Magazine, and caught a further lucky break to publish his first attempt at a travel feature in The Sunday Times. A Certificate in Radio Journalism in Waterford followed, and a Jacob’s Award for the radio documentary The Story of the West Clare Railway.
Having taught English and Cultural Studies in Shen Yang, China for eighteen months, he returned to take up a Master of Arts degree at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, graduating in 1996. Since then he has continued to work in documentary-making, founding Earth Productions as a business in 1998 and releasing its first audiobook, A Tribute to Jim Kemmy the following year.
During the making of the second Earth Productions audiobook, The Seafaring Irish – A Life of John de Courcy Ireland, Lúc was blessed by Dr “Doc” Ireland, who predicted a great future for him as a journalist.
Lúc’s highest career aspiration is to create visionary cinema.
